Overview

UK Visa Assistance is based in Glasgow and advises sponsors across the city, from the West End and Southside to Paisley, East Kilbride, Hamilton and the wider west of Scotland. If you are a Glasgow resident sponsoring your husband, wife or civil partner to join you in the UK, this page explains exactly how we work with you, what the Home Office requires, and how Glasgow-specific factors, from local salaries to local biometric appointments, fit into your application.

The Spouse Visa grants 33 months of leave for an overseas applicant, or 30 months for someone switching in-country. It is one of the most evidence-intensive applications the Home Office handles. Three requirements account for the majority of refusals: meeting the £29,000 income requirement, proving a genuine and subsisting relationship, and satisfying the English language test. We build every category of evidence for Glasgow clients from the ground up, not from a template.

Glasgow and the west of Scotland: We advise sponsors in Glasgow city centre, the West End, South Side, Shawlands, Pollokshields, Govanhill, Partick, Drumchapel, Easterhouse, Paisley, Renfrew, Johnstone, East Kilbride, Hamilton, Motherwell, Clydebank and across Lanarkshire and Renfrewshire. Most of the casework is done remotely by phone, video and secure document exchange, so your location within Scotland makes no difference to the service.

For the detailed rules on the Spouse Visa, the FLR(M) extension, and the route to ILR and citizenship, see our full UK Spouse Visa guide. This page focuses on what is different when you are applying from Glasgow and the west of Scotland, including how Glasgow salaries meet the income threshold, where biometric enrolment happens in the city, and which English test centres are local to you.

Key Benefits

Glasgow advisers, in person or remote

Our office is in Glasgow. You can meet us face to face or work entirely by phone, video and secure document upload. We advise sponsors across Glasgow city, Paisley, East Kilbride, Hamilton and Renfrewshire, and we act for Glasgow-based sponsors whose partners are applying from Pakistan, India, Nigeria or anywhere else abroad.

Income mapped to Glasgow salaries

The £29,000 minimum income requirement is achievable on Glasgow-area salaries across a wide range of sectors, including the NHS, education, construction, hospitality and retail. We confirm which financial category you qualify for and prepare the payslips, bank statements and employer letters in the exact format the Home Office requires.

Glasgow accommodation evidenced correctly

Tenancy agreements, mortgage statements, council tax letters and family accommodation letters for Glasgow properties all count as accommodation evidence. We advise on what is required for your specific housing situation, whether you own, rent privately, or live with family in the city or surrounding towns.

File checked before you pay Home Office fees

Before you submit a single application fee, a Glasgow adviser reviews your relationship, financial and accommodation evidence against the Appendix FM rules and identifies any gap. We would rather fix a weakness now than deal with a refusal later.

Spouse visa help for Glasgow residents

UK Visa Assistance is based in Glasgow and specialises in helping sponsors across the city and the surrounding areas bring their husband, wife or civil partner to the UK. Whether you live in the West End, the Southside, Pollokshields, Shawlands, Govanhill, Partick or further out in Paisley, East Kilbride, Hamilton or Motherwell, we know the Glasgow-specific questions that come up in every partner-route application: how your salary stacks against the income threshold, what accommodation evidence works for a Glasgow tenancy, and where your partner goes for biometrics or an English test before you submit.

This page covers the local delivery side of the Spouse Visa: how we work with Glasgow sponsors, what Glasgow-area evidence looks like, and what the process looks like when your partner is applying from Pakistan, India, Nigeria or elsewhere abroad. For the full rules, financial categories, document formats, and the FLR(M) and ILR sequence, see our complete UK Spouse Visa guide.

Who we help in Glasgow and the west of Scotland

The majority of our Glasgow caseload involves sponsors who are settled in the city or the wider west of Scotland and whose partners are applying for entry clearance from abroad. The most common sending countries we see from Glasgow are Pakistan, India, Bangladesh and Nigeria, reflecting the communities that make up a significant part of Glasgow’s South Side and East End, Pollokshields, Govanhill and the suburbs around the city.

We also act for sponsors across Renfrewshire, including Paisley, Renfrew and Johnstone, and across South Lanarkshire and North Lanarkshire, including Hamilton, Motherwell, Wishaw, Clydebank and Bellshill. If you are in Glasgow or anywhere in the west of Scotland, our service covers you. Most casework is handled remotely by phone, video and secure document upload, but you are welcome to come into our Glasgow office if you prefer a face-to-face meeting or if your case has a complexity that benefits from it.

We also assist people who are already in the UK, including those on work or student visas who want to switch onto the partner route from within Glasgow, and people who came as visitors but need to understand their options correctly before making any application.

Meeting the £29,000 income requirement from Glasgow

The minimum income requirement for the Spouse Visa is £29,000 a year. This is the gross annual salary the sponsoring partner must demonstrate, and it applies to applications made on or after 11 April 2024. Applicants assessed before that date may still be subject to the older £18,600 threshold at the extension stage, depending on the date of their original grant.

Glasgow’s employment market covers a broad range of income levels. Many sponsors working full time in the NHS, in Glasgow City Council, in the financial services sector along the Clyde waterfront, in construction and engineering, in education, or in professional services meet the £29,000 threshold in their own right. The average full-time salary across Glasgow broadly mirrors the UK median, which means the income bar is achievable for a large share of sponsored spouses in the city.

Where a sponsor’s income falls short, the rules allow savings of £88,500, held continuously for at least six months, to be used instead. This is particularly relevant for Glasgow sponsors who are self-employed, who work part-time, or whose income is variable. The savings must be held in an account in the name of the sponsor or the applicant, and the six-month holding period must be demonstrated with bank statements.

Self-employment income for Glasgow-based sole traders or company directors can also meet the requirement, but the evidence standard is different. You will generally need tax returns, company accounts and business bank statements covering the most recent full tax year or two years, depending on how the business is structured. We confirm the right category for your income at the first consultation, before you commit to the Home Office application fee.

For sponsors in Glasgow who work on zero-hours or variable-hours contracts, an income-based application is still possible if your average gross pay over the required reference period meets £29,000 a year. We assess the actual figures before advising you to proceed on that basis.

Glasgow accommodation evidence

Every Spouse Visa application must show that the couple will have adequate accommodation in the UK. The property must not be overcrowded under the Housing Act 1985 definition once all occupants are counted, and it must not be accommodation funded by public funds.

For Glasgow sponsors, acceptable evidence includes:

The overcrowding test counts every person who will live at the property. If you live in a two-bedroom flat in the West End with one other person and your partner will join you, it is unlikely to be overcrowded. If you live in a one-bedroom flat in Govanhill with three other adults already present, the calculation is different. We work through the occupancy numbers with you before you submit.

Family accommodation arrangements, where a sponsor in Pollokshields, Shawlands or another part of Glasgow lives in a family-owned property, are common and entirely acceptable, but the evidence must be in the right form. A letter of permission that does not include proof of the family member’s ownership or tenancy is routinely flagged by caseworkers. We draft the letter and confirm what supporting documents should accompany it.

Biometric enrolment in Glasgow

The biometric requirement works differently depending on whether your partner is applying from abroad or switching in-country in Glasgow.

For entry clearance applications made abroad, your partner attends a Visa Application Centre in their home country. In each country, applications are handled through the designated UK visa application centre, which your partner books an appointment with after starting the online application. Each centre has its own appointment booking system and document submission process, which varies by country. We advise on what to expect at the visa application centre in the specific country your partner is applying from.

For in-country switching applications where your partner is already in the UK and applying from Glasgow or the surrounding area, biometrics are enrolled at a UK Visa and Citizenship Application Services (UKVCAS) centre. Glasgow has a UKVCAS service point. Appointments must be booked through the UKVCAS system after the online application is submitted. We confirm the booking steps and what to bring to the appointment as part of the application service.

English language tests near Glasgow

For the initial Spouse Visa application, your partner must demonstrate English at CEFR level A1 in speaking and listening, unless they are exempt. Exemptions include nationals of majority English-speaking countries, holders of a degree taught and assessed in English, and people aged 65 or over or with certain qualifying disabilities.

Approved Secure English Language Tests (SELTs) for the initial application include IELTS Life Skills, Trinity College London GESE, and LanguageCert International ESOL SELT, among others.. Tests must be booked at an approved test centre on the Home Office’s current approved list; results from non-approved providers or tests are not accepted.

The English requirement rises at each subsequent stage. For the FLR(M) extension your partner must demonstrate A2, and for the ILR application they must demonstrate B1. From 26 March 2027 the ILR English requirement rises from B1 to B2. Any Glasgow client beginning a Spouse Visa application now will need to plan their English progression over the five-year route to allow sufficient preparation time for the higher levels.

If your partner is in Pakistan, India or Nigeria, they will sit the test there before submitting the entry clearance application. The test result must be from an approved provider and dated within two years of the application. We confirm the approved test list and the booking process for the specific country before your partner books.

Applying from Pakistan to join a Glasgow sponsor

Pakistan to Glasgow is one of the most common sponsor-and-applicant pairings we see, reflecting Glasgow’s significant Pakistani-heritage community, particularly in Pollokshields, Govanhill, Shawlands and the broader South Side.

The process divides into two sides. On the UK side, the Glasgow sponsor prepares the financial evidence, the relationship documents, and the accommodation evidence for the Glasgow property, and completes the sponsor declaration in the online application. On the Pakistan side, the applicant completes their portion of the online form, books and attends their visa application centre appointment, submits their passport, TB test certificate from a Home Office approved clinic in Pakistan, and their English test certificate.

TB testing is compulsory for applicants who have lived in Pakistan for six months or more in the preceding 12 months. The test must be done at a Home Office approved clinic in Pakistan and the certificate must be submitted with the application. We confirm whether the requirement applies and advise on the booking process.

The standard processing time from Pakistan is approximately 12 weeks from the biometrics appointment, though this varies with application volumes and time of year. Priority services may be available at the VFS Global centre; we advise whether the cost is justified for your timeline.

Applying from India to join a Glasgow sponsor

Indian nationals applying to join a sponsor in Glasgow are among our regular client group, with sponsors in areas including the West End, Partick, Drumchapel and wider Glasgow. The India-to-Glasgow process follows the same structure as above: the Glasgow sponsor assembles the UK-side evidence and the Indian applicant applies through the designated UK visa application centre.

TB testing is required for applicants who have been living in India for six months or more. Approved clinics operate in major Indian cities. The English test, at A1 CEFR for the initial application, must also be sat at an approved SELT centre in India.

Indian nationals who hold a degree taught and assessed in English may be exempt from the English requirement. We confirm exemption eligibility at the assessment before your partner books any test.

Applying from Nigeria to join a Glasgow sponsor

Nigerian nationals applying to join a sponsor in Glasgow or the west of Scotland apply through the designated UK visa application centre for their biometric appointment. TB testing is required and must be done at a Home Office approved clinic in Nigeria. The English test at A1 must be sat at an approved SELT centre in Nigeria.

Nigerian nationals who are nationals of a majority English-speaking country are not exempt simply on the basis of Nigerian citizenship, as Nigeria is not on the majority English-speaking country list. The degree exemption may apply if the degree was taught and assessed in English at a recognised institution. We confirm exemption eligibility before any test is booked.

Switching to the partner route from within Glasgow

If your partner is already in the UK in Glasgow or the surrounding area on a Skilled Worker, Student, Graduate, or other switching-eligible visa, they may be able to switch onto the partner route without leaving the country. This is called an in-country application or leave to remain application, and the grant is 30 months rather than 33.

People on visit visas cannot switch onto the partner route from within the UK. If your partner came on a visit visa and wishes to apply for a Spouse Visa, they must return to their home country and apply for entry clearance. This is one of the most common mistakes we see, and attempting to switch from a visit visa is almost certainly a refusal. We confirm the correct route at the first consultation.

In-country applications are submitted online, with biometrics enrolled at the Glasgow UKVCAS centre. The standard processing time is up to eight weeks, with a super-priority service available for an urgent decision. The financial, relationship, English and accommodation requirements are the same as for entry clearance.

The Glasgow path to ILR and citizenship

The Spouse Visa is the start of a five-year route to settlement in the UK, not an end point. Once your partner arrives in Glasgow or the west of Scotland on their first grant of 33 months, the clock starts on the continuous residence required for Indefinite Leave to Remain.

Before the first 33 months expire, your partner must apply for an FLR(M) extension of a further 33 months, refreshing the financial and relationship evidence and demonstrating English at A2. We prepare the extension as a continuation of the same file, so nothing is rebuilt from scratch. See our FLR(M) extension guide for the full requirements.

After five continuous years on the partner route, once your partner has passed the Life in the UK Test and demonstrates English at B1, they can apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain. ILR is full settlement with no time restriction. Twelve months after ILR, or immediately if you are a British citizen, your partner can apply for British naturalisation. For the ILR requirements, see our ILR guide.

Note that the English requirement at the ILR stage will rise from B1 to B2 from 26 March 2027. Anyone starting a Spouse Visa application in Glasgow today should build that progression into their five-year plan.

The Spouse Visa is one of several family-route options. Depending on your relationship and circumstances, one of these closely related routes may be more appropriate:

Each route has different eligibility requirements and a different fee structure. We confirm the correct route at the initial assessment.

Costs for a spouse visa application from Glasgow

The Home Office fees are set nationally and are the same regardless of where in the UK you apply from. The entry clearance fee is from £2,064 and the in-country switching or extension fee is £1,407, following the April 2026 increase. The Immigration Health Surcharge is £1,035 per year of leave, meaning around £3,105 for a 33-month entry clearance grant.

Additional costs to budget for include the English language test, the TB test where required, certified translation of any documents not in English, and, where applicable, the priority or super-priority service fee. Our professional fees are fixed and agreed in advance. We give a full written cost schedule at the assessment so you know the total before you commit to anything.

If your Glasgow spouse visa application is refused

A refusal does not mean the application is permanently blocked. Where the decision contains a case-working error, an administrative review may correct it. Where human rights grounds are engaged, a First-tier Tribunal appeal may be available. In many cases, a rebuilt fresh application addressing the specific reason for refusal is faster and more cost-effective than either route.

We review the full refusal letter against the relevant Immigration Rules provisions and advise honestly on which route has the best prospect. Where a tribunal appeal is the right path, we advise on the merits and refer you to a qualified representative for the hearing itself. Our role in a refusal case is to ensure the underlying evidence is as strong as it can be, whichever route you choose.

If your application was refused because of a financial shortfall, a relationship evidence gap, inadequate accommodation documentation, or a missed TB test certificate, these are all fixable with the right preparation. Call us on 0141 536 0269 to discuss your refusal.

How we work with Glasgow clients

The process begins with a free initial assessment by phone or in person at our Glasgow office. We go through your specific circumstances: the sponsor’s employment and income, the relationship history, the accommodation, and any complication such as a previous refusal or a previous visa history that needs explaining. At the end of the assessment you have a clear view of whether your application is ready to submit and what, if anything, needs to be resolved first.

For clients who proceed to a full application service, we issue a tailored document checklist for the Glasgow sponsor and a separate checklist for the overseas applicant, covering everything from payslips and bank statements to the TB certificate and the English test booking. We draft all letters, complete the online form, and submit the application. We manage any Home Office contact during processing and advise on the UKVCAS or visa application centre appointment process.

Clients across Glasgow, Paisley, Renfrew, East Kilbride, Hamilton, Motherwell, Wishaw, Clydebank, Bellshill, Coatbridge and the wider west of Scotland work with us by phone and video as a matter of routine. The immigration rules apply equally across Glasgow and Scotland; your location makes no difference to the quality of advice or the outcome of the application.

To start, call 0141 536 0269 or use the callback form on this page for a free initial assessment of your Spouse Visa from our Glasgow office.

Frequently asked questions

No. While our office is in Glasgow and you are welcome to come in, most of our sponsor clients work with us entirely by phone, video and secure document upload. We advise sponsors across Glasgow, Paisley, East Kilbride, Hamilton, Motherwell, Clydebank and across Lanarkshire and Renfrewshire without needing a face-to-face appointment for every step. We do recommend an in-person consultation if your case has a complication, such as a previous refusal or an unusual financial situation, but the full application can be handled remotely if you prefer.

Yes. This is our most common Glasgow scenario. You, the sponsor, are in Glasgow. Your partner is in Pakistan, India, Nigeria or another country abroad and will apply for entry clearance from there. We work with you from Glasgow to prepare the sponsor evidence: your income and bank statements, the relationship file, the accommodation evidence, and the sponsor undertaking. Your partner attends a visa application centre in their home country for biometrics and to lodge the application. We coordinate both sides of the process.

For in-country Spouse Visa applications, biometrics are enrolled at a UK Visa and Citizenship Application Services (UKVCAS) centre. There is a UKVCAS service point in the Glasgow area. For entry clearance applications made abroad, your partner attends a Visa Application Centre in their home country. We confirm the exact appointment process for your specific application type when we prepare your file.

Yes, in many cases. The £29,000 minimum income requirement can be met by a wide range of Glasgow-area jobs, including roles in the NHS, education, the council, construction, engineering, finance, hospitality and many others. Glasgow's median full-time salary sits broadly in line with the UK median, and a large share of full-time employed sponsors in the city meet the threshold in their own right. Where your income is slightly short, savings of £88,500 can be used to bridge a shortfall, or certain non-employment income can contribute. We map your exact position at the first consultation.

Several approved Secure English Language Test providers operate test centres in and around Glasgow, including centres in the city centre and in nearby towns. Approved providers include IELTS Life Skills, Trinity College London and LanguageCert, among others.. Your partner must use an approved test on the Home Office's list; we confirm which test is right for their level and application stage before they book.

You, the sponsor in Glasgow, work with us to prepare the full UK-side evidence: your payslips and bank statements covering the required period, your employment letter, the relationship timeline and supporting documents, accommodation evidence for your Glasgow or west-of-Scotland home, and the completed online sponsorship declaration. Your partner in Pakistan applies via a UK visa application centre in Pakistan, submits their part of the application online, attends for biometrics, and provides their passport, TB certificate, and English test certificate. We coordinate the full file on your behalf and advise both of you through each step.

Acceptable accommodation evidence for a Glasgow property includes a private tenancy agreement in your name, mortgage statements, a council tax letter, a letter from a social landlord, or, if you live with family, a letter from the property owner giving permission for you and your partner to live there alongside proof of their ownership or tenancy. The property must not be overcrowded once your partner moves in under the Housing Act definition. We advise on the exact documents for your housing situation, whether you rent in Govanhill, own in the West End, or live with family in Paisley or East Kilbride.

Possibly, but the evidential requirement is higher. Zero-hours or variable-hours employment income can be used if you can demonstrate that your gross average pay over the most recent six or twelve months meets the £29,000 annual threshold. The Home Office requires payslips and corresponding bank statements for that period. If the income is variable and sometimes falls below the monthly equivalent, savings can be used to supplement it. We assess whether your specific pay pattern meets the threshold before you apply.

A refusal is not necessarily the end. Where the decision contains a case-working error, there may be a right of administrative review. Some partner-route refusals carry a right of appeal to the First-tier Tribunal on human rights grounds. In many cases a carefully rebuilt fresh application, fixing the specific reason for refusal, is faster and more cost-effective than an appeal. We review the refusal letter against the Immigration Rules, advise you honestly on which route is strongest, and refer you to a qualified representative for tribunal advocacy where that is the right path.

When your partner applies from abroad, the standard processing time is around 12 weeks from the date of their biometrics appointment, although this varies by country and time of year. A priority service, where available at the visa application centre, can reduce this to around three weeks. For in-country switching from within Glasgow, the standard service takes up to eight weeks, with super-priority available for an urgent decision. We advise on whether priority service is worth the additional cost for your timeline.
