Overview
Glasgow is one of the UK's major student cities, home to six licensed higher education and further education institutions that attract thousands of international students every year. If you have an offer from any of them, you need a UK Student Visa before you can study here. Our Glasgow immigration office helps students from South Asia, West Africa, the Middle East, and mainland Europe get their Student Visa right the first time.
This page is written for students coming specifically to Glasgow. It covers the Glasgow-relevant financial figures, where to do biometrics, finding accommodation in the city, and how to move from your Glasgow degree onto the Graduate and Skilled Worker routes. For the full Student Visa rules in depth, including the dependants restriction and work rights, see our complete Student Visa guide.
Glasgow maintenance figure: Glasgow is outside London for Student Visa purposes. The monthly maintenance figure is £1,171, not the higher London rate of £1,529. For a nine-month maximum period, that is £10,539 in maintenance funds, plus your first year's course fees. Both figures must be held in your account for 28 consecutive days before you apply.
We advise students coming to the University of Glasgow, the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow Caledonian University, City of Glasgow College, the Glasgow School of Art, the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, and the University of the West of Scotland in Paisley. We also assist applicants at smaller Glasgow-area colleges and language schools with a licensed sponsor status.
Key Benefits
Glasgow-specific financial calculations
Glasgow is outside London, so your maintenance requirement uses the £1,171 monthly figure, not the London rate. We calculate the exact total for your course fees and maintenance period, confirm the 28-day window, and build the bank statement evidence the Home Office expects for your specific Glasgow institution.
CAS checked against the Immigration Rules
Your Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies must match your application exactly. We check the CAS course dates, fees, and English assessment against the Student Route rules before you submit, because a mismatch between your CAS and your application is a common reason for avoidable delay at Glasgow institutions.
Post-study route in Glasgow planned from day one
Many Glasgow students plan to stay after graduation. From the day you apply, we map the Graduate Visa option, the Skilled Worker switch timeline, and how Glasgow's growing tech, healthcare, and engineering sectors create routes to settlement. Glasgow graduates who plan early avoid the last-minute scramble.
Refusal risk assessed before you pay
Student visa refusals from outside the UK usually carry no right of appeal. The remedy is a well-prepared fresh application. Before you pay a single Home Office fee, a Glasgow adviser reviews your CAS, financial evidence, and English documents against the current rules, and flags every gap.

Glasgow as a student city
Glasgow is one of the UK’s most significant student cities. It is home to six major higher and further education institutions, a combined student population of around 100,000, and a strong international student community drawn from South Asia, West Africa, the Middle East, mainland Europe, and beyond. If you have an offer from a Glasgow institution and you are not a UK or Irish national, you need a UK Student Visa before you can start your course.
Glasgow’s institutions each have a distinct identity and a different international student profile. The University of Glasgow, founded in 1451 and ranked among the world’s top 100 universities by multiple tables, is a leading destination for students from Pakistan, India, China, and Nigeria across medicine, engineering, law, and the social sciences. The University of Strathclyde, a Times Higher Education University of the Year, draws large numbers of South Asian and African students in engineering, business, and technology. Glasgow Caledonian University is known for nursing, health sciences, and business, with a diverse international intake. The Glasgow School of Art attracts students from across Europe and East Asia in fine art, design, and architecture. The Royal Conservatoire of Scotland is a specialist performing arts institution in the heart of Glasgow city centre. City of Glasgow College serves a large international student population on higher national and vocational programmes. The University of the West of Scotland, with its main campus in Paisley and a Glasgow city campus, rounds out the west of Scotland’s offer across business, computing, and health.
Our Glasgow immigration office advises students heading to all of these institutions. This page is written for the Glasgow-specific parts of the application: the financial figures that apply to courses outside London, where to do biometrics, accommodation in Glasgow, and how to move from your Glasgow degree onto the post-study routes that keep you in Scotland. For the complete Student Visa rules in depth, including the English requirement, the CAS process, and work rights in full, see our full Student Visa guide.
Who needs a student visa for Glasgow
You need a UK Student Visa if you are aged 16 or over, you are not a UK or Irish citizen, and you have an unconditional offer from a licensed student sponsor in Glasgow for a degree-level or eligible course. Students from the European Union, EEA, and Switzerland who arrived in the UK before 31 December 2020 may have pre-settled or settled status that permits study without a Student Visa, but those arriving now on a new Glasgow course require one.
To qualify, you need three things in order: a valid Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies from your Glasgow institution, financial funds at the correct level for a course outside London, and an English language qualification at the level set for your course. A file that is strong on two out of three is still refused. Our Glasgow advisers build all three requirements before submission.
If your child is aged 4 to 17 and is attending an independent fee-paying school in Glasgow or the surrounding area, the Child Student Visa is the correct route, not this one.
The CAS for Glasgow institutions
A Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies is a unique reference number issued by your licensed student sponsor once your place is confirmed unconditionally. Every Glasgow university and college that is a licensed student sponsor issues CAS numbers. You cannot submit a Student Visa application without one. The CAS contains your personal details, course details, course start and end dates, and the course fees for the first year.
Before you submit your Student Visa application, your Glasgow institution’s CAS details must match the rest of your file precisely. The first-year course fees shown on your CAS determine the financial figure you need to hold in your account. The course start date on the CAS sets the timing of your application window. If your offer at the University of Glasgow, the University of Strathclyde, or another Glasgow institution was conditional and has since been confirmed, the CAS should reflect the unconditional status.
We check the CAS details for every client at our Glasgow office before anything is submitted. A mismatch between your CAS and your financial evidence is a predictable and avoidable reason for refusal, and it costs you both time and a reapplication fee. For the full explanation of how the CAS works, including what happens if your CAS expires, see our Student Visa guide.
Financial requirement for Glasgow students
Glasgow is outside London for Student Visa purposes. That means you use the lower, outside-London monthly maintenance figure. In 2026 that figure is £1,171 per month for up to nine months, compared with £1,529 per month for courses at London institutions. For Glasgow students, nine months of maintenance funds totals £10,539. Add to that your first year’s course fees as shown on your CAS, and the result is the minimum balance you need to show in your account.
To give a practical example: if your CAS from the University of Strathclyde or Glasgow Caledonian University shows first-year fees of £18,000, and you need to demonstrate nine months of maintenance, the minimum account balance is £18,000 plus £10,539, which is £28,539. That entire sum must be held in your account for 28 consecutive days ending no more than 31 days before you submit the application. A balance that dips below the threshold at any point during those 28 days means the requirement is not met, even if the average balance was sufficient.
Course fees at Glasgow’s universities vary significantly by course and by institution. International tuition fees at Glasgow’s universities vary widely by course and by institution, from undergraduate degrees through to the specialist programmes at the Glasgow School of Art and the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. We obtain the precise figure from your CAS rather than estimating, because the calculation must be exact.
If you are receiving a scholarship, bursary, or official financial sponsorship from a government or reputable organisation, some of those funds may reduce or satisfy the maintenance requirement without needing to appear in a personal bank account. The rules on this are specific. We advise on whether a Glasgow scholarship or bursary from your institution changes the financial evidence you need to provide.
English requirement for Glasgow university courses
For degree-level study at the University of Glasgow, the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow Caledonian University, the Glasgow School of Art, or the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, you need CEFR level B2 in speaking, listening, reading, and writing, through an approved Secure English Language Test. For courses below degree level, including higher national certificates and diplomas at City of Glasgow College or the University of the West of Scotland, the requirement is B1.
You are exempt from the English test if you are a national of a majority English-speaking country, or if you already hold a degree that was taught in English. Some Glasgow institutions assess English as part of their own admissions process and note this on the CAS, which can satisfy the Home Office requirement without a separate test. We confirm at the Glasgow eligibility assessment whether an exemption applies or whether you need a test, and if so, which approved provider and level is correct for your course.
For the full list of approved Secure English Language Test providers and detailed guidance on exemptions, see our complete Student Visa guide.
Biometrics for a Glasgow student visa
If you are applying for entry clearance from outside the UK, you attend a Visa Application Centre in your home country for biometrics. You do not come to Glasgow for the biometric stage of an out-of-country application. For students applying from Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, Nigeria, or Ghana heading to a Glasgow course, the relevant Visa Application Centre is in your country of residence. Booking your biometrics appointment early in those countries is important because June and July slots, ahead of Glasgow’s September intake, fill quickly.
If you are already in the UK and are applying to extend your Student Visa or switch to a new Glasgow course, you submit your application online and then attend a UK Visa and Citizenship Application Services biometric enrolment appointment. We advise on the in-country biometrics process and help you book at the correct centre for your Glasgow address.
Accommodation in Glasgow for international students
Glasgow has a well-developed student accommodation market, ranging from university-managed halls to private purpose-built student accommodation and private tenancies across the city’s residential neighbourhoods.
University halls of residence are the most common first-year choice for international students at Glasgow institutions. The University of Glasgow has halls in the west end of Glasgow, near the main Gilmorehill campus, within walking distance of Byres Road, the Botanic Gardens, and Kelvingrove Park. The University of Strathclyde has halls near its campus in the city centre, close to George Square and the Merchant City area. Glasgow Caledonian University is centrally located near Cowcaddens, with halls and affiliated student accommodation nearby. The Glasgow School of Art, also in the city centre on Garnethill, has a small number of places in halls and access to nearby private student accommodation. The Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, on Renfrew Street in Glasgow city centre, advises students on accommodation options in the surrounding area.
Private rented accommodation across Glasgow is typically found in the following areas for student tenants. The west end, covering Partick, Hillhead, Kelvinside, and Great Western Road, is popular with University of Glasgow students and postgraduates. The south side, particularly Shawlands, Strathbungo, and Govanhill, offers more affordable rents and good transport links to the city centre for students at Strathclyde, Caledonian, and other Glasgow institutions. The city centre and Finnieston are convenient for students at Strathclyde and Caledonian who want to be close to both campus and Glasgow’s commercial district.
For Student Visa purposes, you need to show that you have adequate accommodation in the UK that does not rely on public funds. University halls of residence letters and confirmed private tenancy agreements both satisfy this requirement. We help Glasgow clients understand what the Home Office expects to see in the accommodation evidence, because this is a common area of weak documentation in otherwise solid applications. We are not letting agents or accommodation advisers, but we can tell you whether the evidence you have meets the immigration standard.
The University of the West of Scotland in Paisley, which is within the Greater Glasgow commuter area, draws students from Glasgow city as well as from Paisley and Renfrewshire. Students at UWS are also outside London for maintenance purposes and use the same £1,171 monthly figure.
Working in Glasgow on a student visa
Most students studying at the University of Glasgow, the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow Caledonian University, the Glasgow School of Art, or the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland can work up to 20 hours per week during term time and full time during official vacations. Students at further education institutions, including City of Glasgow College, are typically limited to 10 hours per week during term time.
Glasgow’s economy creates genuine part-time work opportunities for student visa holders. Hospitality, retail, and event staffing are all sectors where Glasgow students commonly find part-time work. The University of Glasgow, the University of Strathclyde, and Glasgow Caledonian all have careers services that can help you find work that fits within your permitted hours.
Working beyond your permitted hours is a visa condition breach that can affect your Graduate Visa application and future immigration applications, including Skilled Worker and settlement. If you are unsure whether a particular role, arrangement, or employer in Glasgow is within your Student Visa work rights, ask us before you start. For the full detail of work rights on the Student Visa, including the restrictions on self-employment and professional sport, see our full Student Visa guide.
Bringing family to Glasgow
Since January 2024, most international students on taught postgraduate and undergraduate courses at Glasgow universities can no longer bring dependants, including spouses, civil partners, and children, to Glasgow under their Student Visa. This restriction affects the majority of students at the University of Glasgow, the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow Caledonian University, and Glasgow’s further education sector.
The restriction does not apply to PhD students and research master’s students at Glasgow’s research-intensive universities. Students at the University of Glasgow and the University of Strathclyde who are enrolled on doctoral or research master’s programmes can generally still bring qualifying dependants under the pre-2024 rules. Government-sponsored students are also generally exempt.
If you are planning to study on a taught master’s degree in Glasgow and your partner wants to join you, they would need to qualify for a separate visa route in their own right. If you are settled in the UK by then, the Spouse or Partner Visa may be available. We advise on the full family options at the Glasgow eligibility assessment, because the impact of the dependants restriction sometimes affects the choice between a taught and a research programme. See our full Student Visa guide for the dependants rules in detail.
After your Glasgow degree: Graduate and Skilled Worker routes
Glasgow graduates who want to stay in the UK after completing their course have a clear onward path, and the planning starts from the day you apply for the Student Visa, not the day you finish your exams.
The Graduate Visa is the most direct next step for most Glasgow students. If you complete an eligible degree at the University of Glasgow, the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow Caledonian University, the Glasgow School of Art, the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, or the University of the West of Scotland, you can apply for the Graduate Visa before your Student Visa expires. Standard graduates receive two years of post-study leave in Glasgow or anywhere in the UK. PhD graduates from the University of Glasgow or the University of Strathclyde receive three years. You do not need a job offer. You can work for any Glasgow employer, try different roles, or look further afield in Scotland or the rest of the UK.
The Skilled Worker Visa is the primary long-term route for Glasgow graduates who want to settle in the UK. It requires a job offer from a licensed sponsor in an eligible role at or above the relevant salary and skill thresholds. Glasgow’s economy has strong demand in healthcare and the NHS, life sciences, fintech, engineering, construction, and technology. Many Glasgow employers and NHS Scotland boards hold sponsor licences, and several Glasgow technology and professional services firms have grown their international graduate hiring in recent years. Time on the Skilled Worker Visa counts towards the five-year qualifying period for Indefinite Leave to Remain.
The Graduate Visa does not lead directly to settlement. You use it to find the Skilled Worker role in Glasgow or elsewhere that opens the settlement route. Graduates who come to our Glasgow office during their Graduate Visa period are in the strongest position, because they have time to choose the right employer and the right role rather than accepting the first sponsorship offer on the last week of their leave.
Student Visa fees for Glasgow applicants
The Home Office application fee for the Student Visa is £558, whether you are applying from outside the UK for entry clearance to come to Glasgow, or applying in-country to extend or switch. The Immigration Health Surcharge for student visa holders is charged at the discounted student rate of £776 per year of leave granted, which is lower than the standard rate charged to other visa categories. For a three-year undergraduate degree in Glasgow, the total IHS across the course would be around £2,328.
Additional costs to budget for include the English language test fee, the tuberculosis test fee if the requirement applies to your country of residence, any document translation costs, and the visa application centre service fee in your home country. Visa Application Centre service fees vary by country and service level. We give a full written cost breakdown at the Glasgow eligibility assessment, accounting for your specific course length and country of application.
How long your application takes
From outside the UK, the standard processing time is around three weeks from your biometrics appointment at the Visa Application Centre in your home country. A priority service is available at some centres for a faster decision. Applications submitted ahead of Glasgow’s September intake, the busiest period of the year for the Student Route, can take longer than at quieter times, and biometrics appointment slots at Visa Application Centres in Pakistan, India, and Nigeria in particular fill quickly in June and July.
We advise on timing and priority options at the Glasgow eligibility assessment. The goal is always for your visa to arrive before your course start date at the University of Glasgow, Strathclyde, Glasgow Caledonian, or whichever Glasgow institution you are joining, with enough margin to arrange travel and settle in before term begins.
If your student visa application is refused
A Student Visa refusal does not automatically end your plans to study in Glasgow. Most out-of-country Student Visa refusals do not carry a right of appeal. Where the decision contains a case-working error, there may be a right of administrative review. In most cases, the most effective response is a fresh application with the specific gaps in the original file corrected.
We review the refusal letter against the Student Route rules, identify exactly what was deficient, and rebuild the file for your Glasgow course. The most common reasons for Student Visa refusals relate to the financial evidence, including funds that were not held for the full 28 consecutive days, a mismatch between the CAS fees and the account balance, or an account held in the wrong name. English evidence problems, including an unapproved test provider or a test result below the required level, are the second most frequent issue we see in Glasgow refusal reviews.
We advise honestly on whether administrative review or a fresh application gives you the stronger prospect for your particular Glasgow course. Where an appeal is available and appropriate, we advise on merits and refer to a qualified representative for the tribunal hearing.

Frequently asked questions
You can apply for a Student Visa for any licensed UK student sponsor in Glasgow. That includes the University of Glasgow, the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow Caledonian University, the Glasgow School of Art, the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, City of Glasgow College, and the University of the West of Scotland in Paisley. Smaller private colleges and language schools in Glasgow may also hold a licensed sponsor status, though smaller institutions occasionally lose or suspend their licence, which is worth checking before you apply. We confirm your institution's current licensed status at the eligibility assessment.
Glasgow is outside London, so you need £1,171 per month in maintenance funds, not the higher London rate. You also need to hold your first year's course fees. Both figures must be held in your bank account for 28 consecutive days ending no more than 31 days before you apply. For example, a three-year undergraduate degree at the University of Glasgow or the University of Strathclyde with first-year fees of £20,000 and a nine-month maintenance period would require £10,539 in maintenance (9 × £1,171) plus £20,000 in course fees, giving a minimum balance of £30,539. We calculate the exact figure for your specific course and institution.
There is a UK Visa and Citizenship Application Services (UKVCAS) biometric enrolment centre serving the Glasgow area. If you are applying in-country from Glasgow, you book a biometric appointment at this centre after submitting your online application. If you are applying from outside the UK, you attend a Visa Application Centre in your home country for biometrics before travelling to Glasgow. We advise on the correct biometrics process for your situation at the eligibility assessment.
Yes, for most Glasgow graduates the Graduate Visa is the most direct next step. If you complete an eligible degree at the University of Glasgow, the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow Caledonian University, or another licensed UK higher education provider, you can apply for the Graduate Visa before your Student Visa expires. Standard graduates get two years of post-study leave in Glasgow or anywhere in the UK; PhD graduates get three years. After the Graduate Visa period, most Glasgow graduates switch to the Skilled Worker Visa for long-term settlement. See our Graduate Visa page for full details.
For degree-level study at the University of Glasgow, the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow Caledonian University, or any other licensed Glasgow university, you need CEFR level B2 in speaking, listening, reading, and writing through an approved Secure English Language Test. For courses below degree level, including foundation programmes and higher national certificates at City of Glasgow College or other Glasgow colleges, the requirement drops to B1. Nationals of majority English-speaking countries and holders of a degree taught in English are generally exempt. We confirm which level and which test applies to your Glasgow course before you book an exam.
From outside the UK, the standard processing time is around three weeks from your biometrics appointment at the Visa Application Centre in your home country. A priority service is available at some centres, which can reduce the decision time. Applications ahead of Glasgow's September intake are the busiest period, and appointment slots at popular Visa Application Centres can fill quickly in June and July. We advise on timing and priority options so your visa arrives before your Glasgow course start date.
Most students at the University of Glasgow, the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow Caledonian University, and similar higher education providers can work up to 20 hours per week during term time and full time during official vacations. Students at further education colleges in Glasgow, including City of Glasgow College, are generally limited to 10 hours per week during term time. The exact work permission is shown on your visa. Glasgow's hospitality, retail, and professional sectors offer strong part-time opportunities for student visa holders, but working beyond your permitted hours is a serious breach that can affect your Graduate Visa and future applications. See our full Student Visa guide for the detailed work rights rules.
A refusal does not automatically end your plans. Student visa refusals from outside the UK generally carry no right of appeal, but there may be a right of administrative review where the decision contains a case-working error. In most cases the most effective response is a fresh application with the specific deficiencies in the original file corrected. We review the refusal letter against the Student Route rules, identify exactly what was deficient, and rebuild the file for your Glasgow institution. We advise honestly on whether administrative review or a fresh application gives the stronger prospect for your particular Glasgow course.
Glasgow has a wide range of accommodation options for international students. Most Glasgow universities offer university-managed halls of residence, which are popular for first-year students at institutions such as the University of Glasgow (with halls in the west end near Byres Road and Great Western Road), the University of Strathclyde (with halls in the city centre), and Glasgow Caledonian University (near the Cowcaddens area). For students in the private rented sector, the west end around Partick, Hillhead, and Kelvingrove is popular with University of Glasgow students, while the south side neighbourhoods of Shawlands and Govanhill offer affordable options for students at various Glasgow institutions. The city centre and Finnieston are common choices for Strathclyde and Caledonian students. We are not accommodation advisers, but we regularly help Glasgow students understand whether their accommodation evidence meets the Home Office standard.
Since January 2024, most international students on taught postgraduate courses and undergraduate courses can no longer bring dependants to Glasgow under their Student Visa. This affects the majority of students at Glasgow universities. PhD and research master's students at the University of Glasgow, the University of Strathclyde, and other Glasgow research institutions are generally still permitted to bring qualifying dependants. If your partner or children want to come to Glasgow while you study, we advise on the options at the eligibility assessment, including whether a separate visa route is available for your family. See our full Student Visa guide for the dependants restriction in full.
